For me over the years, Manitowoc meant very big RED cranes. Ones that tower 300 feet plus, can lift several hundred tons and rolls around like the space shuttle transporter. Our tour guide Kay at Henry’s Street Fishing Village Museum in Two Rivers told me that the crane company was world famous for building monster cranes. She has met many people from all parts of the world and they shared their Manitowoc crane experience.
During WWII (1942-1945) Manitowoc ship yards built submarines. Twenty eight to be exact. Once built, they immediately served. Few were lost, but the remainder of the sub’s continued serving proudly and help win the war. The WWII Diesel USS Cobia submarine is now home-ported at Manitowoc Maritime Museum.
It’s fun time in Manitowoc County, the county fair is on! They are celebrating 160 years of harvest memories. Today is the first day of the fair and it’s all about livestock judging. Once the judging is done, the winners are on display with their ribbons for the rest of the fair. So seeing the judging is the most exciting part of the fair. For me, I grew up on a farm and going to the county fair was a part of life. For Denise , this was a new experience.
Later in the day, we stopped at West of the Lake Gardens. Open to the public, free admission, non profit six acre garden. Best manicured garden I have ever seen. With all the colors and contrast, it was a fun photo shoot. Posting pictures on this site sometimes is frustrating. The photo quality gets whacked due to data compression.
