On the Road

So we are on the road after a frenzied last two months of packing, moving, planning, purging (yet again) and working on closing our house deal. WOW, it’s time for a rest…

Walking Lynchburg Heritage Trail System-Riverside Trail, crossing the James River
Our view of the Jame River from the foot bridge.

We are now both officially living the dream…at least for a while… we have no particular itinerary and we will be taking it easy hopefully hit some MLB baseball games, go to a ‘down to earth’ local rodeo, do some fishing, taste the local foodies, try some local breweries & wineries, music festivals, visit the local farmers market, do a local cooking class, hit the museums and visit as many National Parks…

Appomattox Station was the site of the Battle of Appomattox Station on the day before General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the Civil War.

Our first journey was all the way to Appomattox Virginia, just a few miles from Lynchburg Va, the place we called home for the last 34 years. We are at a small RV Park named Paradise Lake Family Campground. We are here for 11 nights. Nothing special about it but it is perfect for us as we rapped up loose ends. A small fishing lake (caught a couple) is near by, no cell service, no wifi, no cable and no OTA TV. Good thing we have a Verizon unlimited data plan hotspot, we have 2 bars of signal strength and was able to stream Netflix with no problem.

We visited the American Civil War Museum in Appomattox. For decades, there’s been a myth surrounding Lee’s sword. Legend has it that upon surrender to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant after Lee gave up his sword to Grant as a traditional surrender gesture, but Grant refused the sword.
The sword, scabbard and the Confederate gray uniform Lee wore to his fateful meeting with Grant
We visited Panther Falls, a few miles outside of Buena Vista, Va. off the Blue Ridge Parkway. To get there requires taking a rough 4 mile single lane gravel road. For a weekday, it was a busy place.
Young and foolish…..
