Newnan Georgia

Back on the road heading for Newnan Georgia. I waffled back and forth with all the pros and cons trying to decide which way to go.  It’s a 400 mile trip. The Columbus Georgia State highway route or the Interstate Atlanta route.  At the last possible minute I decided on the Interstate route so off up I-95 we went. We were on our way to visit Denise’s brother from southern California who was on a business trip in Newnan.

Newnan is a quaint historical town about 20 miles south of Atlanta. Not knowing much about the area, we decided to visit the Visitors Center first thing at the historical court house in the town square. The nice lady kept our undivided attention for at least 45 minutes telling us about; Alan Jackson home town, the famous 1948 murder trial, Oak Hill Cemetery, the many movies that were shot here and what the town is really known for, it’s many historical homes .

We told the lady that we did not know Alan Jackson was from here and she said, “Wow, you just passed his twin sisters as you were walking in, they were here for about an half hour going over a new promotion with me!”  Again, we are just amazed at what our adventures leads us to. She said his family lives in the area and his mom and dad are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery but he has moved and now lives in Nashville.

Alan Jackson-Where I Come From

The 1948 murder trial received wide press coverage in the rural community. The wealthy landowner, had virtually unlimited power, killed a poor white sharecropper tenant. The case was unusual, because he was one of the richest men to ever be given the death penalty and his case was the first in Georgia where a white man was given the death sentence upon the testimony of two black men. A book and movie “Murder in Coweta County” was done about the true story. The movie starred Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash. Most of the movie was shot right here at the courthouse.

Oak Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for confederate soldiers, Revolutionary war soldiers, two Georgia governors and several generations of Coweta County families. It really tells the history of the county.

Coweta County and especially Newnan has been a popular location for film. Some of the most popular films that were shot here are: Hunger games 3, Zombieland, Passing Glory, Sweet Home Alabama, Grass Roots, Fried Green Tomatoes and probably another 20 more. And as we were here they were shooting a winter scene for the new Jumanji movie with fake snow along main street.

Saturday we drove through the crazy Atlanta traffic to an RV Show
Lunch at Ted’s Montana Grill with Denise’s brother Mark

We have been noticing a propane smell around our LP tank compartment. It kept getting worse as the outside temperature warmed up. It doesn’t take much of a leak to really smell the place up.  I tried soapy water but no luck. It must be a very small leak. I finally went to Home Depot and bought a propane leak detector. I still couldn’t find the exact location. All it told me was that the leak concentration was dangerous. We didn’t take any chances, so we turned off the tanks. We now have no propane for our furnace. The temperature in Newnan is suppose to be in the cold 40’s. I Googled for an RV parts store and found a Camping World. It took about 30 minutes to replace the regulator and hoses. Turned the propane back on and did a sniff test. No rotten egg smell…yea! Now we have heat!
