“The Superstitions”

From Carlsbad NM, we are heading west on I-10 to Casa Grande, Az., It’s a two day drive with plans to spend the night at Dream Catcher campground in Deming NM. Dream Catcher is an Escapee’s campground and since we are an Escapee member our cost is $25 with full hookups. Not bad!

Finding a place to stay for a month this late in the reservation season in Arizona was no easy chore. December through March, snowbirds have reserved just about every RV site in southern Arizona. Lucky for us we found an open site for the month of December in Casa Grande which is about 30 miles below Phoenix.

Yesterday, we drove up to the Lost Dutchman State Park. Named after the fabled lost gold mine. The park is located in the Sonoran Desert, 40 miles east of Phoenix. We hiked the 2.5 mile Treasure Trail up Superstition mountain. The lady ranger said this was an easy to moderate hike. Half way up the mountain, Denise commented that she was wrong! The trail was challenging at times and required several “take-a-break moments.” All in all, we both said after the 2 hour hike “Now that was fun!”

Superstition Mountain got its name from a group of Native Americans (the Pimas) living in the area, they thought the mountain was superstitious. Of course we can’t skip over the legend of the Lost Dutchman’s gold mine hidden somewhere, which is another ingredient to the Superstition Mountains’ mystique.
