Lexington, Ky

Please bear with me, this post is a little long. We have seen a lot these past few days.

Wednesday morning we rolled out of our campground in the outskirts of Chicago around 10am hoping to let the traffic calm down and well,  it didn’t. To top it off, I had set the GPS when we first got it a few months ago to bypass all toll roads. There must be a lot of toll roads in the Chicago area because that GPS took us into places that RV’s have never visited. It had a route solution that I was questioning but chose not to mess with it. I was not wanting to back track or do something bad at this point.  It was two hours of going through the worst road condition that a RV should never go through. From very low overpass (few inches of clearance) to roads that were rougher than the roads to Alaska.   We finally made it to I65 south and worked our way into thin traffic and got the heck out of Chicago metro area. A few miles down the road, we crossed into eastern time zone and lost an hour. That’s ok, we were only going to do a 200 mile day. We spent the night in Lafayette, IN.

Just outside of Lafayette is Prophetstown State Park, our over-night campground. It was a first-come first-serve park which means we did not have a reservation. We got the last pull through site and it had full hookups. Since it was an overnighter for us and we really didn’t care about having water and sewer hookup but because of the 90+ weather, we wanted the electric hookup for the AC. So we took what we could get.

We did a quick excursion of Lafayette and wandered through Purdue University campus. Very Nice! Then we crossed the Wabash River which separates the university from the city. The city square is around the old courthouse which is nice preserved and the tallest building with a steeple (did not get a picture). The old downtown has been rejuvenated and is much a walking city.

We left early the next morning at around 7:30 and arrived Thursday at Kentucky Horse State Park Campground in Lexington Kentucky around 2pm. Our first impression of the area is that we are in for a treat.

It was time for us to buy new tires for the truck, so I spent a whole afternoon on Friday getting new tires put on. We got some nice Michelin’s that really reduced the road noise. Now, we can whisper sweet-nothings to each other.

Friday is usually a no big deal unless there is a University of Kentucky football game. Lexington is home the University of Kentucky and they are hosting the University of Florida. Our campground went into football tailgate festivities with both team fans showing their colors and pride! We decided it would be a great day to go shopping and get a feel of the area.

One of our stops was at Whole Foods. They were having a car show on EV’s (electric vehicles). I have been watching the EV evolution for several years and believe that in the next 25 years, EV’s will be majority of the vehicles. I got a chance to get up and close. I’m really excited about the future of these cars!

My very first EV car show.

Saturday, we got to Keeneland Grounds at 8:30ish to watch jockeys and horses train. We were told to get there early before it turns hot, usually it’s dawn to 10am. Keeneland is probably the riches horse race track. It is rated a 1 out of the 10 best tracks in the world. It’s second most notable is its sales auction of Thoroughbred’s.  We so happen to be there for the annual auction of Thoroughbred yearlings. One year olds being bought in hopes to be the next triple crown.

Preliminary show of yearling before auction.
Nice!
I would guess BIG $$$$

Sunday afternoon, we saved the best for last and went to the Kentucky Horse Park. It is adjacent to our campsite and is part of the state park. Here, you are able to see and learn about horses, they’re part in history. There are many horse of different breeds to view along with daily shows of trained horses abilities. We were very impressed with the high quality of museum displays and shows.

Da Hoss is the poster boy for overcoming odds as an underdog and a testimony to where careful care can take a horse with heart. As a yearling he sold for $6,000 but he went on to garner just under $2 million on the racetrack.
