Chicago

Our travel lifestyle allows us to wander and now we are wandering into the Chicago area. Not because of the city but because I wanted to visit an old Navy buddy. I met Sten about 45 years ago while serving on the USS Henry B. Wilson. We worked together in the same division and made two WesPac cruises. Over the years, we have kept in touch and connected whenever we got a chance. He attended Denise’s and I wedding (43 year ago) and he met my in-laws and family. It was a real treat to see him again. I know I’m getting senile when I can’t remember much of anything back in those days. Sten has great recall of people names and the things we have done. He even remembers our conversations……It was great to rehash old memories.

We don’t especially like big cities. But we were up to it visiting the “Windy City”. Knowing we only had a day to explore the city we narrowed a must-see list. What a hot and humid day we chose as temperatures were in the upper 80’s and very humid. We caught the Metra Train and took a pleasant 1.5 hour train ride into the town of Chicago. What we liked best was the fantastic varied examples of architecture and art, as well as just seeing the L-trains whiz by. We also very much enjoyed the Riverwalk along the Chicago River. The heat was over powering which caused us to forgo our list of things to see. I estimated that we walk about 6 miles and we were exhausted. We finally took a break and cooled off at Frontera Grill, a Rick Bayless restaurant. We each had a very cold tasteful margarita that made us not want to get up. Then we ordered a nice Mexican dish and then melted into our seats for a while. After being refueled and ready to go, we walked back to Union Station and caught the 2:30 train back.
