From Vermont, we headed east on the famous US Highway 2. It’s a two lane highway that starts in Everett, Washington and spanning 2500 miles across the northern continental United States. The highway was originally built in the 1920’s. We picked it up in northern New Hampshire and drove the 300 miles into Bangor. The two lane highway weaves along the Androscoggin River, through the White Mountain National Forest and crossing through many small towns. Bethel, Maine stood out as it was much a tourist destination for river rafting and also the surrounding mountains provided many ski resorts for the winter months.
We toured around Bangor. It’s a small city of 33,000. On Main Street, a towering statue of folkloric lumberjack Paul Bunyan hints at Bangor’s former status as a timber hub.
Mount Hope Cemetery is the second oldest garden cemetery in the United States. Established in 1834 and has many civil war generals and other notable figures resting here.
Just outside of the city is Bangor City Forest. It has close to 10 miles of hiking trails. Nice place to work off our lunch of lobster and crab rolls.
Nice country and still in short sleeves.
The locals are complaining it way too hot.
Send me a lobster roll
Too far to ship, you & Bobbie need to come this way!
