Wilmington NC

Rolled out of Orlando at 8am and headed north and found our way onto I-95. It was time for a change from two lane roads to interstate driving.  The traffic was light and what a nice Sunday drive this turned out to be all the way to Savannah where we rolled into a Wally’s parking lot and we were good for the night.

We noticed when pulling out this morning at 8am that the air had a chill, this is something that I’m not quite ready for but it was another sunny gorgeous morning. We filled up with diesel ($2.26) and continued up I-95 to Florence SC where we changed from interstate driving to 2&4 lanes highways heading east to Carolina Beach State Park with maybe a dozen small towns thrown in along the way.

Carolina Beach

Once we got into Wilmington NC, we took a very busy 2 lane road south for about 15 miles along the Carolina Beach area to reach the state park. This area reminded me of the outer banks, it is built up with big rental vacation beach houses and not much else. We settled into our site and noticed the spring time curse was upon us.  Yes, yellow pollen from the oak trees was in full force, coating everything and giving me itchy eyes and Denise endless sneezing.

The next morning, we gathered our stuff and headed out to explore the area. We toured Fort Fisher on Carolina Beach area and then took a ferry across Cape Fear River, the ICW (Inter-coastal Waterway) to Southport.

The seagulls were dive bombing the passengers because a kid was throwing bread into the air. We stayed in the car but it was fun to watch.

Southport has a backdrop of massive live oak trees, the Cape Fear River, bunch of very nice Victorian homes and the historic Fort Johnson.  So Southport is North Carolina’s Hollywood.  Lot’s of feature films and documentaries were film here. Few of the more popular ones are; Under the Dome, Safe Haven, Dawson’s Creek.

We Stayed At:

Carolina Beach State Park is about 15 miles south of Wilmington NC.  The park had just been newly renovated, it is in great shape. We had the full hook-up with 50 amp, water and sewer.  We paid $20/night with senior discount. It is a great location near the beaches and adjacent to the Inter-coastal Waterway. We would stay here again.

    1. Thanks Cris…I think about you quite often wondering if you have gotten the bug back about RV’ing again. We are embarking on our trip of a life time, Alaska bound! I expect it will be a 12,000 mile round trip…..We are on the road again!
