Hiking the Great Channels in Abingdon, Virginia

The Great Channels of Virginia are a maze of 400 million year old large sandstone blocks with crevices 30-40 feet deep that you are able to walk through and explore. One of the most unique places in Virginia, it is located right here in Abingdon, Virginia.

Our son-in-law Will invited me for a hike to explore the Great Channels.  The timing couldn’t be more perfect with the changing of the leaves to full color and the temperature in the low 70’s.

It was a six mile hike up and down Middle Knob mountain. Atop the knob,  1200′ elevation change (4,208′), is an old retired fire tower and a great view of Beartown Mountain. Continue over the boulders past the fire tower is the Great Channels.
