Chesapeake, Virginia

Not to far south of First Landing State Park, about an hours drive away is Chesapeake Virginia.  It is surrounded by the Dismal Swamp to the west, the North Carolina border to the south, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to the east and Virginia Beach to the north. It’s a nice quite area. This is where our youngest son and his family lives; Dan, Erika (wife) and Jace (our youngest grandchild).  Grandma and granddad needed a grandparent fix and so here we are.

Erika, Jace, Denise and I walked the famous Dismal Swamp trail. It’s a highway that was turned into a bike/walking trail along Dismal Swamp canal. It’s a nice level, straight trail.

This guy, a sizable lake turtle, just floated in front of me while I fishing the Northwest River. He stayed there and watched me for a good half hour. When I cast my line, he would swim out to the orange bobber, bump it with his head and then swim back in front of me to watch me some more.  It was entertaining and weird.

For a morning trip, we drove down to Currituke, NC., took a free ferry to Knotts Island, about a 45 minute ride and drove back to Great Bridge outside of Chesapeake for lunch. It was a very nice ride, great scenery and plenty of old neat farm houses.

We were invited to spend an afternoon with Erika’s aunt Jean and uncle Byron at their small farm on a sizable lake. They have goats, chickens and all the wild creatures on their property.

Byron is a horticulturist by career and a renown tree expert. His expertise has given him much recognition with universities and research institutions. He gave me an afternoon of a lifetime of experience. I really enjoyed my time with him.

We viewed from outside the fence.
Byron got the canoes out and took us on the lake for a tour. I learned so much from Byron about the native tree's along the lake.
