Wichita, Kansas

After leaving Holbrook Arizona, we drove 400 miles to Tucumcari NM. It was a cold (to us) and windy drive but the interstate driving made it not a bad drive.  From Tucumcari, we took a two lane road for 400 miles to Wichita Kansas.  The drive on highway 54 was a work-out as the cross winds fought me the whole way but the drive through this part of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas was worth it. This is the heart of the great plains. The small towns along this route can be seen miles away by radio antenna’s extending 100’s of feet into the sky. The anticipation of an approaching town might be 15 miles away. Once at these small farm towns, it was interesting to see the revitalization they did to the streets and old buildings.

“Keeper of the Plain” Statue on the Little Arkansas River going through Wichita. Every night, there is a fire burn show around the statue except for this spring.

Wichita was a surprise for us. This is a really nice city.  Clean, modern and it doesn’t have a big city feel even though it is the largest city in Kansas.  For a city of 300,000 people, it is the cleanest that we have seen on this trip.

I had forgotten that my past employer, Georgia Pacific owned by Koch Industries is headquartered in Wichita. Funning how things work out, our campsite was around the corner from the headquarter campus.

We Stayed At:

USI RV Park in Wichita, KS. We paid $40/night with 50amp electrical, water, sewer and wifi. We got over 25 channel of OTA (over the air) broadcast digital TV.  The park is gravel but very well maintained.  We would stay here again. The site size is ok and plenty of room to maneuver our 40ft.

Say something, love to hear from you!
